Anxiety is something that many people experience day to day. It can consist of feelings of uneasiness and fear that may arise when dealing with stress, when facing a difficult situation, or when making an important decision.

In the moment and after, it can be hard to deal with anxiety however, there are ways to better handle it and reach inner peace.

Turning Your Attention Elsewhere To Combat Anxiety

In the moment, find distractions from your anxiety.  For example, when you start to feel overwhelmed, try these things:

Breathe

  • Inhale by taking a deep breath through your nose. Hold the air in your lungs for three seconds. Exhale slowly through your mouth. Pause before taking your next breath. Concentrate on your breathing as you focus on the feeling of filling your lungs with air.
  • Practicing deep breathing can help calm you down in the moment by lowering tension and switching your focus from the anxiety to your breathing.

Drink Water

  • Drinking water is helpful when feeling anxious as it can naturally calm you down and keep you hydrated.

Walk

  • Going for a walk can help get you out of your head, as well as get you out of the house. This is important as it can help to clear your mind and help you get some exercise which is good for your mental health.

Daily Practices To Combat Anxiety

Overall, learning how to understand your anxiety and what triggers it can help you better control it and minimize its impact on your life. Some ways to do this include:

  1. Being aware of your anxiety — This is the first step in dealing with anxiety. Knowing that you are experiencing anxiety can help you to embrace it and conquer it, as opposed to constantly going against it.
  2. Accepting your anxiety — Coming to terms with the fact that you have anxiety is important as it can help you be in control of it instead of it controlling you.
  3. Sticking to a day-to-day routine — Staying consistent can help you prepare for each day and limit unexpected feelings and events.
  4. Focusing on the present — Keeping your mind on the present can help stop your brain from wandering thoughts that can create feelings of stress and fear.

Following these tips can help to combat anxiety and can ultimately help you feel better.
