As restrictions lift, some anxiety may arise in residents when thinking about integrating back into society. Just the thought of it may seem daunting and overwhelming for them. With this, it is important to help residents manage their anxiety so they can have an easier and smoother transition. Here are some strategies to help your residents:

  1. Keep a Routine - The lockdown has likely caused residents to form a routine which has become their sense of normalcy. Sticking to this routine can help residents to still feel in control of their lives.
  2. Slowly Introduce Seeing People - Residents may be able to see loved ones or go to more places as they open up. Help them stay flexible by switching up their routine a little. This can be as simple as planning a visit or outing with a loved one.
  3. Take Breaks - If seeing people or going out is too much, have residents take some time to themselves. Have them do activities they know that they enjoy.
  4. Breathe - Encourage residents to take deep breaths or stretch when feeling anxious. This can help them come back to present and stay calm, especially if they are trying something new or doing something they have not done in a while.

These are just some of the ways to help residents to feel more comfortable integrating back into society. Remind them that these feelings of anxiety are normal and that taking it slow can better help them ease into life after the pandemic. As always, remember that residents can be referred and also speak to your facility psychologist if their anxiety gets to be too much during this time of reintegration.
